Have you ever thought what if you were a comic book character? Recently, I had a fan who sent me a katana and paid me to shoot some photos with it. He told me he was creating a comic book wherein I am the main character. While I am excited, I am not allowed to disclose more details about this project until it gets released. Since I cannot contain my excitement, I decided to create a character of my own! As I was organizing my wardrobe recently, I found this gorgeous cat masquerade mask that I have completely forgotten I have. That’s when I thought, why not shoot some content wearing the mask and using the katana?
Fighting Styles: Sword fighting, Yaw-Yan (“Yaw-Yan, also called Sayaw ng Kamatayan (Dance of Death), Filipino Martial art is a Filipino style of Kickboxing developed by Napoleon A. Fernandez and based on older Filipino martial arts.”)
Her fight: As a firm believer of feminism and women empowerment, Catana invests her time defending and fighting for anyone who experiences abuse and trafficking, especially if they are women. While she uses dangerous fighting styles, she does not resort to killing. Instead, she leaves permanent damages to her “prey” as a way to teach a lesson.
When not busy defending abuse victims, in her normal life, she goes by “Ana” (which is close to her creator’s name, Anne). She spends her time as an artist and is known to attend protests for causes addressing animal rights, climate crisis, and racism. Ana is known to be friendly but knows how to keep it real. She is straightforward and isn’t afraid to speak her mind and express herself. As an animal lover and vegan, she has an cat sanctuary in her backyard, taking care of rescued cats, particularly disabled ones that need extra and special care.
Well, that was my attempt on creating a comic book character off myself. I didn’t really develop this character too much and used my very self as the basis. I may not have copyrighted this character I’ve quickly done for fun, if anyone ever decides to use or base a character on Catana, I would appreciate asking for permission. I have done a bit of search if anyone has gotten this idea for a character and I haven’t found any. Therefore, if you want to use Catana on whatever project, a heads up would be necessary.
Here is a fun video I made with Catana:
Tutorial: How to self-shoot neon lights theme
Shooting this was pretty simple! I swear, it’s so much easier than it looks.
Materials I used:
- 2 Study lamps
- 2 Colored plastic cellophane (blue and red) — I recommend getting the three primary colors red, blue, and yellow so that if you ever want to play with colors, you can just overlay them to produce different colors
- Camera remote
- My phone
- Cover the study lamps with the plastic cellophane (2 layers, depending on how intense you want the colors to be)
- Place each lamp on opposite directions; one on your left, one on your right
- Turn your room lights off else the neon effect will not happen
- You may expect that the photos would not look as neon as my final photos here. Don’t fret! You simply have to adjust the contrast of your photos so the colors would be vibrant.
While shooting, my foster kitten, Muffin, wanted to steal the spotlight! I think she was like, “Meowmy Anne, I wanna be on camera, too!” Watch her photobomb my shoot! She’s so adorable.
Hope you liked my comic character creation, Catana! If you decide to do a self-shoot with the tutorial I shared, I’d love to see what you come up with. How about you? If you were a comic book character, what would your name be, fighting styles? Share your ideas below!
